Spread Betting vs CFDs

Discover the difference between these two similar, margined forms of derivative trading

What is Spread Betting?

Spread betting allows you to speculate on the price movements of an asset without owning it. You enjoy benefits like tax-free profits and the security of an FCA-regulated entity with negative balance protection. Simply predict and place a bet on whether the price will rise or fall, with your gains or losses determined by the accuracy of your prediction.

What are CFDs?

Similar to spread betting, a Contract for Difference (CFD) allows traders to speculate on the price movements of various instruments — such as stocks, indices, commodities, metals, and forex pairs — without owning the underlying assets.

What’s the Difference Between Spread Betting & CFDs?

Spread betting allows you to speculate on the price movements of an asset without owning it. Unlike CFDs, where you trade lots, spread betting involves placing a specific amount of money on the direction of price movements. In spread betting, you choose an amount to bet per point of movement, known as your 'stake' size. For example, if you bet £1 per point, each point the price moves in your favour means you gain £1 multiplied by the number of points. If the price moves against you, you lose the same amount. At Taurex, the minimum stake is £0.10, with increments of £0.10, allowing precise control over your trades.
